The "Foam of the Sea" Crisis in the Modern Muslim Home

 

Why Authentic Quranic Education is the Only Antidote to the Growing Trend of Apostasy.


Are you looking for ways to improve your children’s behavior? Perhaps you’re struggling to encourage a love for prayer or the memorization of the Quran. Whether you are just beginning your journey, have been striving for years, or are experienced in guiding others, I believe we must constantly center our families around the core of our faith.

We cannot take Islam for granted. It is essential that we continue our own Eman development while actively teaching and advising the next generation.

A Deeper Look at Our Ummah As I look around our Ummah today, I see incredible achievements. Muslims are excelling in all areas of public life, from politics and professional sports to the arts. We see masajids rising in every corner of the globe, from the snowy landscapes of Northern Canada to the historic heart of Italy.

From a broad perspective, Islam is growing. However, when we look closer at the state of our families, we see a troubling reality. A 2017 Pew Research Center survey found that roughly 23% of adults raised as Muslims in the U.S. no longer identify with the faith. This is not a localized issue; similar trends are appearing globally. While our numbers increase through birth rates, we must address the "foam of the sea" effect, being numerous in count but weakened by a love for worldly distractions.

The Reality of Our Times The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) warned us of a time when nations would gather against us, not because we are few, but because of Wahn, a weakness of heart born from a love for this world (Abu Daud). We are living in those times. Our families are constantly dazzled by distractions that pull us away from our purpose.

The Solution: Returning to the Source The only path forward is to learn and teach Islam according to the Quran and Sunnah. We often rely on our own strength, our numbers, or our professional successes, but true victory belongs to Allah alone.

We can look to the Battle of Hunayn as a timeless lesson. The believers were pleased by their great numbers, yet their numbers did not avail them until they turned back to Allah in sincerity. As it is written:

"Allah has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all... Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers..." (Quran 9:25-26)
