Base-Ten Blocks
The Architecture of Numbers: Base-Ten Blocks
A physical representation of how numbers grow and relate to one another.
Base-Ten blocks move a child from "counting by ones" to understanding the actual architecture of our number system.
1. The Anatomy of Base-Ten
Each piece is 10 times larger than the one before it, perfectly mirroring our decimal system:
- 🟦 Units (Ones): Small cubes representing 1.
- 📏 Rods (Tens): A long piece made of 10 units.
- ⏹️ Flats (Hundreds): A square made of 10 rods (100 units).
- 📦 Cubes (Thousands): A large block made of 10 flats (1,000 units).
2. The Power of "Trading"
The most important concept is regrouping. This is the "Aha!" moment where they realize that 10 of one thing becomes 1 of another.
Game: Race to 100
- Roll a die and take that many unit cubes.
- As soon as you have 10 units, you must trade them for 1 ten rod.
- As soon as you have 10 rods, trade them for 1 hundred flat.
This teaches that the digit "1" in the tens place actually represents ten individual units.

Expert Recommendation: Torlam 131 PCS Base Ten Blocks
This set is a great choice because it includes a write-and-wipe mat to help organize your child's math solutions visually.
3. Addition & Subtraction
Addition (Regrouping)
When adding 25 + 18, the child combines the units and sees they have 13. They "trade" 10 units for 1 rod and move it to the tens column. Result: 43.
Subtraction (Decomposing)
When subtracting 32 - 14, the child sees they can't take 4 units from 2. They "break" one rod back into 10 units to make 12. Result: 18.
Tips for Success
- Speak the Language: Instead of "carry the one," say "exchange ten ones for a ten."
- Compare Sizes: Ask, "How many rods would it take to make a thousand cube?" (Answer: 100). This builds scale visualization.
